i have followd that, i even did a new hard drive, then put it in non-working xbox, getting an error 09, my undrstanding of this error is that hard drive is to small, it was only a 6 gig seagate! if i had a bigger one, i would try but i dont, being reason i am trying with the one that is locked!

so do you think if i get ahold of a 8 gig or so hard drive, and make another like i did, that it should work in the xbox, any xbox? or do i have to have a mod chip in it to work?

sorry for delayed response thereturn, i'm at work right now so may be slow to update thread.
sesko, when you try the hot swap i had to have a power cable from my pc going to the xbox hard drive or it would not work for some reason.

to hot swap ( tried and tested by me with the help of thereturn)

get your xbox hard drive out and ready but still connected to your box with the ide cable.
From your pc run a power cable to your xbox hard drive & have a spare ide cable in your pc's motherboard.
Boot up your pc and press 'pause break' key before the drives are detected.
Turn on your xbox and when the logo appears quickly pull out the ide cable and replace with the spare one from your pc.
The press 'A' on your keyboard and it should start to boot up again.
Once it has finished booting up you may get a new hard ware detected message, you may not. i done it a few times and it still worked even though it did not detect new hard ware.
run xboxplorer ( again you may get the error message can not find fat blah blah blah drive) but as long as you get the partitions listed down the side it will work.
in partition 3 you need to put your system files i.e ms dash and all the original files. partition 4 takes the game saves and modded stuff.
once that is done close the xbox plorer and all other programs running on your pc and disconnect your xbox drive from your pc's ide cable. leave the power cable plugged in though.
you can now connect the xbox ide cable into your hard drive and once done, turn your box off and on again. you should now be able to boot up your xbox like it should do.
if so put the box back together and all should be fine :)

okay, i will try that, i havent done the power supply from pc to xbox with ide cable of xbox still connected yet, i have however, left the power hooked up from the xbox and plugged spare ide into xbox hard drive numerous times trying to get it to unlock. as soon as logo appears, i have unhooked ide quickly and plugged ide of pc into it, then pressed a on keyboard, pc will boot up, and like i stated, xplore360 wont detected any fatx drives, but hard drive shows up in sys manager!

like i have posted before, i created new hard drive with link i provided tutorial, it gave me the error that drive is to small (6 gig), do you believe if i get a bigger hard drive, that it will work? remember, i dont have a mod chip, and i am using files from a xbox that is already softmodded working fine!
    thanks

i am not sure about the putting in a new drive as i have never had to do this before. but in regards to the hot swapping, my pc would not read the xbox hdd until i tried it using a pc power cable in the xbox hdd. strange i know but i tried about 5 times using the xbox power cable before trying the other way and it worked first time.

well, i will try this and hope for the best, at this point in time, i have nothing to loose, its not my xbox, just one that about 4 mos ago, i soft modded for a guy, i know, that he screwed it up, he said last game he played on it was halo 2, i think he tried to update the dash with xbox live update somehow, reason for the error 21, being flagged with new dash or something like that!

i have just realised that if for some reason your mod has gone off the box then it will not read in the pc.

what do you mean shinnster? As long as xbox unlock the hdd, pc will read it. So which case xbox will not unlock the hdd? the hdd is wiped out?

well i'm sure that once i had mine back to standard, i tried to access my hard drive again via this method and i could not get it to read on my pc. once i softmodded it again the pc read it first time.
