    Hardly a conversion revelation either.

Depends on where you are. If you're in the U.S.(and most other countries), backing up your dvds is very much illegal, even if you own the dvd you're doing. You own the dvd, not the movie. They don't fall under the "fair use act". If you have to break (bypass) copy protection, to make the copy, it's illegal. Period.

We all do it, to protect the originals. I think they sorta understand this, so they don't really pursue us, unless you're selling the copies. Then you're a pirate.

Torrents are even more illegal than backing up, because you don't own what you're downloading. So, if you're doing anything with something from a torrent, chances are it's illegal, no matter what software you're using. If torrents were legal, they wouldn't be trying so hard to close them all down........
Again, it depends on what country you're in.)

    No humor at After Dawn?

    Jesus...

Fine... use whatever you wish, pay whatever you want.

I'm no lawyer, but my comment about being "legal" referred to the SOFTWARE I was recommending... Since it's FREE you don't have to download a cracked version.

Divx, Xvid ... who the hell cares? It ALL converts with DivxToDVD.

As for the "conversion revelation" ... I never said it was. I only said it was FREE and it WORKED and it is the way I do it.

Bottom line... ConvertXtoDVD costs money and DivxToDVD does not.
Other than the Nero that I use there seems to be absolutely NO reason to spend money on conversion software other than to line someone's pockets.

the point is if you are going to give advice, make sure your facts are straight... or you're gonna get called on it. Don't make it seem like you are the authority figure of knowledge in a specific area, especially if you don't know "exactly" what you are saying. Yes your methods will work, maybe not the best, maybe not the fastest. Yes they work, but might only be best in your opinion.

I don't understand............. what was supposed to be humorous?)

The way you worded your post....
it sounded like you believed that. Technically, you were wrong, and I thought you needed to know.
Sorry to upset you. Say that somewhere besides here, and you could get yourself in trouble..............

I never said you were wrong about the software doing what you said.
DivXtoDVD works very good, and it is free. You can get it here:

I didn't come here to start some kind of flame war.
I saw a guy who was trying to be as PC as possible in order to try to avoid being slammed by the typical forum full of I-bullies.

Q: "I download movies. How do I do [such and such]?"
A: "Don't download movies. Your are a menace to society."

Q: "I want to do a conversion but I don't want to buy software."
A: "Buy this heavily sponsored software and quit bitching about it."

    Etc.

I went through the same bullcrap and basically had to learn it all myself. No one wants to help, certainly not here at Afterdawn where the mere mention of something that might have boobies might just get you banned or the thought of downloading something from a p2p network gets you nothing but sideways looks.

The answer is simple and free and only requires an occasionally helpful poster to point people in the right direction. A casual glance across the net will show you exactly what I mean.

I usually recommend Afterdawn because it usually has quite a lot of good information and is usually not riddled with the typical mindless bickering and posturing by members who wear their post counts like badges of honor.

I'm sorry I wrote a lengthy post that had an error in it. Xvid beats out Divx. I didn't know. I bow to those who do. I guess saying that it was just my perception of facts wasn't enough of disclaimer.
If I ever write a helpful post again I'll keep that in mind.

I can't speak for everyone else, but the thing that stood out to me was how after many of us had posted, you came in on some high horse with one of your "famous" guides after we had the problem solved, the original poster was happy. Don't get me wrong, that's fine if you had something to add. Except you came in, wrote your guide as if your way was the only way and everyone up to that point was an idiot. You never said it was your perception, it sounded like you solved the problems of the world that everyone else in this thread caused.

    you said:

First the guy I think you are talking about was telling the original poster to get a crack for convertxtodvd. I like many others in her don't support stealing programs. He was not trying to be politically correct.. he was trying to beat around the bush and drop "hints"

I'm sorry if some of us on here suggest pay programs, some of us also suggest the free ones... most of us suggest both from time to time. We never told the original poster he was a menace for downloading anything... we gave him the proper tools to do what he wanted, not once was he chastised for downloading anything. Once again, you have the facts wrong...

    you also said:

if we are all so terrible and give bad advice (we don't want to help?) so much so that you have to learn it all on your own, please don't feel like we are holding you hostage and you have to stay.
