    erm, hey mort...
do you know if that that led switching trick is available on the 1693?
I just ordered one so as to upgrade to NEW litey, and read here, there, and everywhere that it's green only like the 53 and 73...ooops.

awfully dumb thing for them to do if ya ask me. got clue?

    daimyo,

Sorry charlie. Starting with the 1673 they went to a green only led (the actual indicator light on front) instead of multi-color. They started useing green when they merged with sony but the early 16xx models still had a multi-color led which could be changed back to lite-on way red-burn green-read (which I personally prefer) useing modified f/w. They might as well just be sony's now.

    Whitfield,

When you get your new litey set up you can use the free lite-on booktyping utility to automatically booktype your dvd+r media to dvd-rom. You can download it here. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441

Hi hey---thanks a lot--I think I will booktype all my burns (I think I should, right?)--have not been able to with the HP burner, so I will be a newbie at that--hopefully it is not too difficult cause I am not that smart! All my blank media are either TY, Verbatim or Ritek (all ink-jet printable--been having fun with my new Epson printer)so, I wont be able to blame the media for bad burns! You people may well hear back from me soon--thanks again--Have a good day

    Whitfield,

I booktype all my burns dvd-rom and yet to find a player that won't play em. Now you do realize this will only work on dvd+r media don't ya.

Hey Mort--thanks again--Yes, I do know that it must be DVD+R which is fine--that is all I have anyway (maybe I should practice on a DVD+RW?)--My neighbor has not been able to play any of my DVD's (though 2 other friends have no problem)--so I can't wait to see if the booktyping makes a difference in his stand-alone DVD player (3 year old Sony--forget the model #)--

You could try a dvd+rw but I doubt you will have any problems. Once you set the lite-on booktype utility to booktype dvd+r media to dvd-rom it will autmatically set them to dvd-rom unless you change it back. You can use dvd identifier to verify that they are booktyped dvd-rom after the burn. You might want to also download kprobe (free) from that same link I gave you earlier to scan your discs. It only works with liteys and rebadged liteys. I use it for all my scans.

    Mort--
I was just thinking--do I have to download all the firmware since unit was made or just the most recent?

Just a comment on lite on in general....next to plextor which i feel is the best... lite on is a very close second. I always buy lite on and i have 2 lite on burners and 2 lite on 16x dvd drives. They are great products that do not have any rip guard protections so you can rip dvd's with ease. They have very low break down rates and work incredibly well. I would not buy anything else

Well I think its important to shout out good equipment. We all talk about how bad media can destroy ones "back up" dvd collection. A bad dvd burner and drive can do much worse.

Just thought a I would add my 2cents in here. I have a Lite on Burner cannot remember the exact model its there newest one out though. And after 14 Burns I love it. It is fast and quiet and a pleasure to use. I did alot of research prior to buying and all reviews and recommendations led me to Lite On. You will be very pleased.

    Whitfield,

Glad to see everything working well. Don't hesitate to ask any questions regarding anything you are having trouble with or not sure about. Believe me I've asked some questions I thought were pretty stupid. Ya can't learn if ya don't ask. Good luck and happy burning.

Mort--thanks again to you and arniebear, I am now burning DVD-Rom's and tried them in my neighbor's stand alone Sony DVD player and they worked! I have lived next to this guy now for a couple years and when he borrowed my DVD back-ups they would not work--any of them--and we tried several times--So, with this new burner, I burned a backup as a DVD-ROM and took it over--It worked!! He thinks I'm a genius and I am not telling him different! hehe Have a great weekend guys
