& how are you going to get the heatsink off 1st or are you going to use the dremel with the heatsink still attached
I'm thinking put it in a vice and proceed with caution, but if you take the fins down to far wouldn't it make the nb hotter? as heat rises to the fins and then escapes if it can'r wont it stay in the block and overheat the nb? or are you just taking out a couple of rows? cause if that is the case then you should be ok? just don't or wouldn't reccommend shaving the hole top.
The heatsink should come of fairly easy should it not? You can see a wee straight metal bit pointing at the NVIDIA chipset pull that down and it should release the heatsink
can't tell if clipped on or glued on as picture looks like glued on. striker68 will be able to tell us if clipped on or glued on
Ain't that VGA cooler a bit extreme for a 9550 i would have thought somtething along the lines of a Zalman vf700 would be more suitable, also that VGA cooler is kinda simillar to the one i use Thermaltake giant III http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/chipset/a1919.htm it's a beast but it works darn well, striker68 try running 3dmark 03 you should be scoring around the 3.4k area
Yes it is a bit much but it's free from a friend. And hell, it looks cool. But not as cool as the Giant III. What a beast. As far as dremeling, I was only planning on trimming down a couple rows of fins close to the vga. We'll see. I have a back up heatsink just in case.
Yeah it's a beast alright and a fecking nightmare to put together, that 9000rpm is on the squirrel cage fan gets kinda loud what with a volcano 12 as well, you know your gonna lose a pci slot with that cooler & a NB fan would be a better solution rather than dremeling something to death ...try driverheaven.net for some modified drivers these should help out your 9550
Do you know what the max is? It's kinda hard for me to say coz it's not me doing it, increase it bit by bit till you see Artifacts and test it using 3dMark. [bold]remember any problems reduce it right away[/bold]
On the ATI OC tool, there is a tab that says:Find Max Core and Find Max Mem. Do I run those to find max for both? Is this safe to run without my vga cooler installed.(currently stock heatsink)
Yeah i would try that, i would not however leave it at what it sets it at i would lower it a bit just in case, well at lest till you get the cooler.
