Thanks for posting some of the changes in the new firmware, GrimmTY. I wish Phillips would do so too! I am curious - how do you know these differences? I have two players, and I am planning to upgrade the firmware on one of them so that I can do comparisons between them. Is that what you did? If so, I may not have to do as much testing! Is there any way to determine if any given XVid file will play on the DVP642 - other than actually burning it to a disk and putting it in the player?
Thanks for the replies everyone I have tried all that you suggested. No luck. @ Drew2k I had the insert and followed the instructions to the letter. My problem is that I have only found 2 .srt's that work but most of the one's I have don't. Basically I can only get .srt's distributed with DivX on them to work. For Example: Lovers.Concerto.2002.DVDivX-SKY.[kloofy].srt These subs I downloaded and burnt to a cd-r and they showed up with the "..." Icon and would play but unless I have subs that come packaged like this ( that is they explicitly say DivX on them ) they won't work. I have only have one idea left to find out if this problem is just my player or a problem inherent with the DVP 642's themselves. Can someone who has the Philips DVP642/37 who has had no problem playing .srt subs please download this srt and try to play it on their player ? And let me know if it works. The sites where I download my stuff the subs are created by users and I have no idea if it's something that they're doing thats causing the problem. If so is there an app out there for Mac users to convert .srt's to make them "DivX srt's"? Does that even make sense as far as I can tell .srt's are just text files.... Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated !!
Kangasama, The main difference I notice about your working and non-working .srt files, is that the non-working one has a \n (newline?) in it, and the working one has not. It just shows multiple lines one after the other. Eg. Working .srt ------------ 00:04:42,690 --> 00:04:47,060 I guess he's fighting in his dream. Non-working .srt ---------------- 00:04:42,690 --> 00:04:47,060 I guess he's fighting[bold]\n[/bold]in his dream. It could be that that .srt parsing code within the player b0rks when it hits a backslash. You could try a search+replace in wordpad to remove the \n. Let us know...
Thanks for the suggestion I will try it and let you know if it helps but I don't think that is the issue though ... even on my computer those /n tags don't work. VLC player and Mplayer just displays them as if they were part of the dialogue. The thing is I have srt's that don't have any /n tags that still don't work. I have the Philips DVP-737 with divx certification. Comparing to Philips customer service it shouldn't playback XVID although it does play most of it. Searching for info about this on the web and looking for options of converting xvid to divx i found this forum. I found out that the player doesn't play back XVID files with AC3 codec. When i insert a XVID file without AC3 it is perfect. It is a wonderful toy, it plaýs anything, perfectly great and region free as well. although nowadays there are a few more players than only from Philips (like eg Samsung) in my opinion Philips is the 1st choice! if there is anyone that can give helpfull info about how to solve the xvid playback problem i describe or who can give me good advise about converting xvid to divx i would be really gratefull.
Kangasama, I am a Mac user and I've had the same problem as you. It has to do with the CD burning software. Apparently Toast and the built-in OS X burners cannot burn a proper ISO disc that the DVP can understand. Whils this doesn't affect video files, it does affect text files such as the subtitles. I have tried Discribe, by CharisMac, and all the subtitles worked flawlessly. You can download a trial version at: http://www.charismac.com
usually xvid movies are 700megs but some of them are also 1.4gigs thats because they use AC3 codec. and ive played back many xvids with ac3 codec on my player and they work fine. i got firmware 1109
Kangasama, I tried both of the subtitle files (Phoenix13.srt, sangdoo7.srt) and they worked for me. I am using the same model and the latest firmware. The webpages you posted have some HTML footers at the end. I am assuming you are striping them before you try them out. If so, the only two things I can think of is: a) Your player is defective, b) You are doing something wrong. Almost every movie (countless of them) I watch has some sort of subtitle and there was only one instance my subtitle file did not work. I am using WinXp with Nero 6.x (ISO)
I am trying to get this unit to play divx avis converted from .ts files (HD 1280x720). Football games specifically. It will play at 24 fps but the picture is too jerky and anything above that hangs at PLAY with no picture at all. Has anyone had any luck getting the dvp642 to play converted HDTV files?
riga: I play tons of converted HD stuff on my player. Unfortunately I don't do the work myself, I just download them ready to go, so I don't know how much help I can offer, hopefully someone who knows more will come along eventually. The only info I can contribute is what I got from using gspot on my numerous vids. They all use xvid codec, at 23.97 fps; x:y = 608x336 (1.81:1) [=38:21]; bitrate = 1014 kb/; Qf = 0.207 bits/pixel. Don't know if thats any help to you, but thats all the info in the video section of gspot.
Balaam and Riga, The differnce is the resolution. The TRUE High-Def vile of Riga's is too high a bitrate for the player to show using DivX. Balaam's "high-def" was recorded in highd ef, but downsampled to a manageable resolution (i.e. 720x480 for NTSC or lower). Bottom line - in order to play the high-def DivX file, you'll have to (unfortunately) re-encode at a lower resolution and therefore a lower bitrate.
Hi guys i am thinking of buying this player. I just had a few question, 1. There seems to be so many models mentioned here dvp630/642/737 etc. which one is the best among them, or are they all equal? 2. There seems to be some overheating problems with these models. Have any of u experienced it? 3. What is the possibility that future firmware upgrade will include support for ogg,aac,wmv?
pvssr: 1. Even though I'm bias since I've only used the 642, I would HIGHLY recommend it if you have lots of divx movies you wanna watch on your TV. Never used the other models, though. 2. I haven't had that problem at all. I woudl guess maybe people just don't have good enough ventalation or something. don't set it on the carpet, people! 3. I highly doubt it, although I did see one guy report that his played wmv's, but I haven't tried that. You never know, though.
I have been very happy with this player so far. But I am considering buying an 44" HDTV (DLP). How does divx/xvid look on a HDTV? Is it horrible or passable or very good? I also heard people had aspect ratio problems with it when they use component cables (Apparently it is forced to Progressive mode where you cannot select screen size). Any comment on that? Will that problem go away if I use a SVHS cable (hence interlaced)
