I think the problem is with Nero.

Are all the disc's that you got the illegal disc error ones that you used the InCD format on and then could not erase?

I will say again. Don't use InCD. Don't even have it installed.

DVDINFOPro seems to be able to erase the disc's that Nero can't. Try again erasing another disc that gave you that error and then try a Nero burn.

a Short reminder mindgod, - as the good "Doc" said, media causes 99% of problems such as yours. Stay on the Ritek road, especially when using single write discs, you can't go wrong.

    Glad you're cooking now -

    Cheers,

    Pete

I was getting some of these illegal errors for a while, and the problem WAS with the INCD program. I deleted it, and it never came back up again. So I would be sure to keep that off my machine.
As far as upgrading your RAM, it can never HURT you to do so, but it is not really needed. I usually monitor my RAM when I burn or decode a DVD. When I burn, it seldom reaches 120 megs of RAM in use, and for decoding, it will seldom go over 256 megs. And if you are not going to be running any programs while you are decoding, as Pete warns not to do, then the extra RAM would not come into play anyway. (If you are, then you will want to be over 512 megs anyway, one gig is better.)
I too have heard of MANY problems with using USB 2.0 external enclosures. In fact many that you can buy after market warn specifically NOT to install a DVD-RW in it. A DVD-ROM is fine, but they bottle neck on the burner side. So if you installed it yourself in a external enclosure, check a few web sites on that, and see if yours is one of the ones they are having problems with. I guess FIREWIRE is suppose to work fine with a DVD-RW external, so if you have one of the either OR kind of enclosure, that uses either USB 2.0 OR Firewire, than I would suggest you use the Firewire port, if you have a connection for it on your computer.
But the best advice is to just pop it into your case. I don’t know what makers box you have, but they are all pretty simple to get into now. And it is only either 2 or 4 simple screws and two plugs to undo to slide the old out and the new one in. Or if you have an open 5 ½” bay, then you can just add it to your array. Just connect the two plugs, (those being the POWER AND ATA connections) slap the box back together, and your done. If you are running XP, you probably wont even have to load a driver for it, it will just load its self.
I hope your problem does not reoccur, but if it does, that is what I would check into before anything else.
    Good luck to you.

    mindgod,
Again I remind you to check my sig as we have the same burner. For 1 1/2 yrs my NEC was in a 2.0 USB setup, with a recent purchase to replace another burner I swapped the NEC to the inside and the Pioneer to the USB external setup.

I have had ZERO difficulity with either burner running in a 2.0 USB external config. setup. Double-check your fan specs to make sure your drive is really Kool BUT the drive itself, unless it proves faulty sometime in the future, should be finer than frog hair, I say, I say slicker than a southern, slimey, 3-toed sloth - I mean, I mean, it'll do gooden :p)

Shooter: The USB 2.0 enclosure kit came with the drive, meaning I didn't install it myself. I bought it on Ebay (NEW) from pcmaxxusa. Like Scuba said, I doubt the problem lies in the USB itself, if anything, the drive has problems with Nero. Today I got a new program (trial) called Copy to DVD from Herrie's site (www.herrie.org) and my question is: has anyone used it? It is supposed to be "good" with NEC's.

But in the meantime, i will keep using DVDINFOPRO, DVD Decrypter, and DVD Shrink, to burn ISO's. Though I REALLY prefer to make DVD's with Video_ts files.
Video_ts files are just SO much better to work with (for me) that is. I will keep updating.

and Pete...YES I will help others when I have a chance. Questions about Nero and Media are pieces of cake. the other ones I will leave to YOU guys. lol take care

    mindgod,

Once again I believe I can be of help :)

Copy to DVD works well with my NEC and my Pioneer. It is not only a good proggy but one of the fastest I've used. More good news - With the release of the new DVD Shrink, ver 3.2 - Copy to DVD can also be used as a default burner with DVD Shrink also :) It can burn VIDEO_TS Folders as well as ISO images. It's a good proggy to try and to buy -

Take it out for a spin mindgod, take it around the block and kick the tires, - it does everything you've asked for -

    cheers,

    Pete

that really helped but i've found out that Ritek G04 was in the same category as sony. So which one has a better quality. Ritek is cheaper and it's more popular as i've seen

    any comments?

    Hi psmo290
That will depend on your burner. Check the following site for other users experience http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia

    My burners prefer +R media - RICOHJPN-R01

    I hope this helps

PS This time I left out the period on the link sorry about that.

i have a pioneer dvr-104 and it can only burn dvd-r/rw but i have burn about 13 dvd-r ps2 back ups and they all worked. I used sony dvd-r but i want to try Ritek cause i heard they are better and cheaper.

Does anybody know if Ritek G04 will work on my burner. I heard that you need to upgrade my type of burner but mine's a newer version and it's already upgraded.

I've got over 500 burns on RiData / Ritek G04's and another 200 perfect burns using Verbatim DataLife.

There's nothing that can beat a good quality media. So many problems are avoided -

    cheers

    Hi Pete,
I am not disagreeing with you, I am sure your external 2.0 burner works fine. I am simply saying just because you have the same burner, does not mean they will work the same way. Most of it relies on the system its self that it is connected to. (As well as the enclosure.) And as my friend from CompUSA will tell him, just because it came with it from the factory, don’t mean it will work.<LAUGH>
I did a test with my Pioneer 07, I know it is NOT the same drive you guys use, but I found it interesting none the less, and thought you might as well.
I put it in a USB 2.0 enclosure I use for a 300 gig hard drive that works on either USB 2.0, OR..Firewire.
I first tried it on my back up computer, (I build my own, but the basic specs are a 1.8 gig P4, and half a meg of ram on a Asus board.) I tried it first with Firewire, and it burned a back up of the Omen II no problem at all. I tried it with USB 2.0, and all I got was failure errors each time I tried it.
Then I connected the SAME drive & enclosure combo on my main computer. A 3.2 gig, a gig of Ram, on an Asus board. First try was with Firewire, that worked fine. My Second try was with USB 2.0..and ON THAT computer, it worked fine as well. <laugh>
So that tells Me anyway Pete, that USB 2.0 works FINE on SOME machines, but not on others.
I am sorry if I upset you with my post Pete, if so, it was TOTALLY unintentional. I have the utmost respect for you and your knowledge, and you have helped ME out many times in the past as well as MANY others. So if you took offence, I am sorry.
By the way, I love the new Sig you have now.<LAUGH>
