shooter ... thanks for sharing your results with us. I have often thought about getting an external burner, however, I seem to witness a lot of problems with them. They do seem to work for some, but not for others. My only other thought here about the failure on your backup computer is that there may be a corrupt file that is related to USB 2.0. I've attempted to help people with externals before without success, and I finally get to the point of suggesting a fresh OS install. If you get to that point, and the USB 2.0 starts to work, please post this fix, as this would be very valuable information we could pass on to others.
Golly gee there Shooter, I didn't know I was upset. I was saying that an external should work not that it would work. I gave up on trying to figure out PC's and their resident Gremlins years ago. As the Doc said, one might have to do an OS install to get it right. When that becomes the solution, use Fire wire (he, he) cheers,
Hi Doc, I did a fresh install on that machine only two weeks ago, (the one that would not burn with the 2.0 enclosure installed to it.) I don’t use it very often, and put in a bigger hard drive, so I reformatted it, and did a clean XP Pro install on it. Then loaded the USB 2.0 drivers that I know work with everything else I own, including that external enclosure that I tested on my other computer. Both are Asus mobos..and both use the same USB 2.0 controller “BRAND” anyway. So I really have no clue as to WHY it does it either??(LAUGH) Other USB 2.0 devices work FINE on it, as does USB 2.0 hard drives, CD burners, and DVD ROMs..just not DVD burners. I just wish I could figure out WHY some work with USB 2.0, and some don't. I have been testing different things for over a month now, read speeds, write speeds, cables, enclosures, etc..etc..and I can not get a SOLID reason for WHY it is so erratic, other than the hard ware SYSTEMS vary from box to box. They both run Identical software, so.. you got me Doc..? Just for S**Ts and giggles, I tried doing the same thing with my Plextor drive tonight, and I got the SAME exact results. So I KNOW it is ONLY in that one computer that it will not work with USB 2.0..but no clue as to WHY?(LAUGH) I was told that the USB 2.0 controller was “probably” the main problem, “when one occurs”, but I don’t believe that either. As a pal of mine did the same test on two machines using the “Same on board controller” on both mobos. He had the same results, one worked, the other didn't. So I tend to think it is the enclosures, or the USB 2.0 cables more than anything else. Some just work with a system and some don’t. As his worked on the slower processor, rather than the faster one like mine did.(Laugh) I DID notice a difference with the plextor in one category however, with my Belkin 2.0 cable, the burn speeds would run up to 8X if I wanted to burn that fast, even on 4X media. But when I changed it to a non “brand name” cable, it would still burn, but ONLY at 4X or lower, same computer, same enclosure, same drive and media. So that MAY be the main problem..but I can not say for certain, it may just be “that enclosure” didn’t like that cable..??(Laugh) But..I will keep poking it with my stick until I find out something anyway, or..until my stick breaks.(LAUGH) I just hate to GIVE UP on it. Thanks for not taking offence Pete. I didn’t think you did, but I just wanted to be sure.(smile) IF I find out anything new, I will let you guys know. Shooter===>>>>
I have sony DVD RW DW-U14A and also have the same drivers as yourself, i've had no problems with my dvd burner so i doubt it's your drivers.
