    ok
    this is wierd.
i conected the variable attenuator 0-20dB to the back of the cable box and put the cable in it.
same results. so we moved the red button thing around at the back and it went worse and a bit better depending on how far i turned but it was never watchable.
so i took it off and just put the cable back in and by chance turned it on playhouse disney as the kids were mithering for it and it was working , so i tried the other channels and they were all working , maybe 2 or 3 blocks evry 20-30 seconds so i thought "bingo its working". i decided to rescan as i thought this my get the perfect picture back but it was just same so i thought ok , its 100 times better than it was. so i left the kids watching handy manny and by the time i got back downstairs 5 minutes later it was back to square 1 , unwatchable!
how can this be? i just dont understand!

i replaced with a new one because i thought that might be why.
should the attennuator be plugged in the back of the box?

you need the best part of a 70 /80 % signal for the channels to stay other wise you will slowly lose them again and again
