I see the light as being purple. That was the only effect I was after. Experimentation is often the only way to get answers you know. Clearly, that spectrum is not invisible to us :p

Quite simple, make the actual die 40% larger!
Though to be fair, it's only using 22% more power (supposedly). Still a fair bit though.

Last weekend I took a X264 download over to my brothers(Stand up comedy). We generally use Arcsoft Totalmedia theatre 3. With Arcsoft, we started getting incredible pixelation. Hardware Acceleration was enabled. But at the time, I just thought try Media player classic HC. Worked for a few minutes, then Windows 7 completely locked up. Had to unplug it. Went back to Arcsoft, and disabled hardware acceleration. Played without hitch after that. But I noted the GPU temps(Geforce 210) were rather high for HD playback. Or atleast my GTX 260 wouldn't run that hot. I wonder if the card is already quitting.
I'll be encoding my BD rip of Iron Man 2, to x264 @ 1080, and trying it again. Because if that card is going, it may be time to try ati in that mobo. Even though several ati models are referenced in its manual, and warned against. I'd like to see how an ati card handles the underscan.

If it's 1080p the G210 will have to work pretty hard to render it as it's slower than the CPU at decoding video a lot of the time, so that may explain why it gets quite hot. Should never completely crash the OS though, if that's happening either the card is bad or there's a driver problem.

That particular file was only 720P. I wonder about the card. Now I'm REALLY regretting that card :p

I'm face palming myself right now.

    A Pentium D can decode 720p fine :p

Oh damn! Well, I'll play with it tomorrow night. Perhaps tonight. If my 1080 file plays fine, then it was probably just a bad coded file. I've had video files that I encoded/transcoded act funny ;) Mmm hmm. The cpu could handle the strange code, but if there were some unknown exception, perhaps the hardware acceleration couldn't do it. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

There are plenty of bad rips out there, and plenty of bad codecs for playing them with!

I've noticed that if you're running x64 win7 using the x86 build of MPC HC can cause problems.

Pretty sure its 64bit version. I'm meticulous about things like that. Besides, it usually works without hitch. My guess is it was a bad encode. I'll be going over there tonight to play some more. I also had the thought, that people that upload and encode probably run with their computers overclocked as much as possible. If it were a bad overclock, bugs like that would occur.

Makes sense - 40% larger chip, means 20% larger per side - meaning the current graphics coolers will probably not work on it.

Still for 40% more power, and only 22% more energy usage, that's a more efficient chip. That tells me that we should see some really nice energy efficiencies when they drop to the 28nm die size middle of 2012 (just before Musharoff starts campaigning to resurrect his political career in Shaff's home country.)

Hey Kevin, how big is your 264 BD rip of Iron Man 2 going to be? The reason I ask is that I would be interested in getting an ftp copy of it when you're done, if possible, depending on your bandwidth. Coincidentally, I got hold of a 10-12 gig 264 1080p rip of that exact same file, which, at that rip size, should have had excellent quality, virtually identical to the BD.

But I couldn't get it to open on the vista phenom with ati 3650, either with divx plus, or 64 bit mpc hc, or any of the other players that I have.

We decided it had to be just a corrupt file. If you have good overnight upload bandwidth, I would love to have you throw your successful file on my ftp site to see if I can get it to play on the phenom, or on the new Q9450 with 8800GTX.

    Rich

70% drop per side, so the same sort of efficiency drop as the HD4870-> HD5850.
That gained a 55% performance boost per watt (as a 5850 uses the same power as a 4870), so it's conceivable that with the 28nm series, there'll be something as powerful as an HD6870 that only uses 145W, or a little bit less than what a 4870/5850 currently uses, theoretically meaning something with exactly double the raw power of the HD5870 would only use 200W, and easily be manufacturable as a single card.

Confirmed it was a buggy X264 file. Played Independence Day, and Iron Man 2 on his HTPC last night. Not even a small hiccup :D Gotta love ripbot264. Though Independence day was rebuilt via Bdrebuilder ;)
Guess my Overclock is rock solid :p

Been a long time since we've seen the names at the beginning of the last list.
Thankfully nothing too horrible in this lot, two 6870s get the full pass for the trio at 2560x1600, assuming they perform as expected.

any one play the MOH beta. I thougt it was fantastic. Small maps aside, felt like a BC2 version of COD4 promod. Very quick paced and fun, andpre ordered the limited edition for £27. Not bad.

1920x1200 everythin turned off at dx9 i was hitting around 10 FPS. Maxed out DX10 but no aa was in the low 30s. Gonna experiment for the best mix.

When you say 10, do you mean 100?

sorry 110 my bad. Hahaha. 10 would have been horrible. That 30ish feels like a nasty slideshow as it is.

MOH is meant to be largely the same engine as BFBC2 right? IMO that means it should run about the same and look about the same, which is a good thing, though I wouldn't like to see it get any more demanding, as it tops out quite high with AA and HBAO enabled, at least for DX10. Can't say for DX11 (yet), and not going to for a while, having ordered 8 WD20EARSes for my server this weekend.

Medal of Honor's single player will be Unreal 3 based and the multiplayer will be Frostbite 2 based like BC2. Only issue I can see is that beta testers are reporting it to be like CoD4 XD Not a fan of twitch shooters.
