Fair enough. How long is sufficient for a reasonable guarantee of stability? I may run it later.

 

the big dogs say 6 hours. personally I don't like to stress my components that hard, that long. I run them an hour. very rarely is there going to be that kind of a demand on your pc in the real world so why torture your hardware that hard that long and lower their life expectancy or damange something. just my opinion of course.

but to actually say my OC is stable it would have to pass 6 hours.

 

Ok, I'll give it an hour tonight and see what happens.

 

My max now for overclockig is 3.07 GHz and 855 MHz on the RAM. Prime 95 was fine after an hour. I could go higher with better components or less RAM but think about it, Do I really need faster? Its a Q6600!

 

You don't NEED to go any higher. But still, it's a Q6600 it should be able to go higher than that!

 

I know I don't need to, thats why I stopped. I can't go higher because of my RAM I bet and because of my stupid fan that can't cool it at those speeds.

 

I didn't know that fans could be so happy.

Which Q6600 do you have?? G0 or C3 stepping?? I'm curious because I have the B3 version and plan on OC'in when I get my GFX card RMA'd.

Also which cpu cooler did you get? Sorry if you've already answered those questions.... I'm lazy and don't want to read the last 10 pages....

GM, the G0 cools better and overclocks better.

 

Kinda like Nsync or something. lol. A synchronous device that cools the main processing unit of a computer. lol. Yep sammy that was a lame term wunnit?

Well there isn't a review that isn't a core 2 duo anywhere obvious, so my apologies, that was the first one I saw.

 

Yep, well aware of that I just wanted to see what he was using to see how far he got his unit. I didn't pay much for my Q6600 so the issue of OC'in is almost moot. Anyway I'm sure I can get it close to 3.0GHz which is good enough if you ask me.

im not sure you have phrased that quite right but i think i know what your getting at. if you have the same fsb/ram/pcie clocks it doesnt matter which multi the cpu is on as its still the same amount of data running thru the nb, but if you can set a higher multi and lower the fsb it will lessen the stress on the mobo and possibly give you more room to set the other 2 clocks higher. the nb can only handle so much data at once, it finite, and to achieve the best oc you need to ballance those 3 clocks till you get the most out of it and find that sweet spot. now this may mean dropping your max cpu by a couple of hundred mhz so you can get a nice cpm/mem ratio with a nice pcie speed but thats they way the biscuit crumbles somtimes.

Nah, I'm off to bed as well methinks - or rather watching TV in bed... Ah, the wonders of networked fileservers on High res PC monitors... All I need now is a remote control for it!

 

It's pretty damn hot. Seriously, VERY hot. Other tan that I have had no particular issues.
