Hee hee! Got my new stuff :) Can't wait to play. Unfortunately, gotta work today :( Imagine that LOL! All in due time ;) Still have to find my capture card too. I won't start without it! Must have outer limits LOL! I have an inkling of where it could be though. Such a shame that video cards can't act as an input as well. Sorta like a crossover switch. Decide whether to run dual monitors OR use the other port for input. THAT would be awesome! I suppose they'd have to reconfigure GPU's to accommodate that kind of technology though. Although video cards are simply miniature motherboards, that are dedicated to graphics processing. At least in my opinion :p

I just removed the cover from the VRM cooler part of the heatsink, and was able to raise the CPU Host Frequency to 257MHz, for 3.6GHz with the 14x CPU multiplier. Idles at 30C for the CPU, and 39C for the motherboard. Stressed with Orthos, it get's to 37C for the CPU, and 45-46C for the motherboard. This weekend I'm going to pull the NB/VRM cooler and mod it with Ceramique. I think that will be worth the effort. I'm betting there are thermal pads on the heatsinks, just like on the covers. The heatsink on my P35-DS3R had thermal tape on it, and it worked much better after I used Ceramique on it. I didn't want to mess with it when I first put this MB in because I was afraid of breaking something, as both heatsinks are connected by the heatpipe. I should have taken the time and done it back when it was first installed! LOL!!

I also encoded a huge movie, Batman Begins, 1080P. It's the first time ever, that I've been able to complete an encode at 3.6GHz with this CPU, without the computer crashing or locking up. I didn't raise any of the voltages either, and it runs solid. The ambient temperature is 25C. I just want to get the motherboard temps a little lower, and if I can, it should overclock even higher. since the temperature of the CPU stays below 40C stressed with Orthos, the CPU temps seem to be a non-issue. The problem has been the motherboard temps all along. Hey, You live and you learn!

    Stay Tuned,
    Russ

37C at proper full load? That doesn't sound right for a quad core. You'd struggle to pull that off on an Ultra-120 with a huge fan in a big case, and that's assuming the voltage hasn't been raised too... It's an awesome temperature to get, but seems a little inaccurate, is all... :S

ok 64bit vs 32bit? whats the big difference other than being able to see mass amounts of memory? and why is 64bit such a pain to get running. i dont know this to be true just what ive heard from others.i jsut got my win7 ultimate 64bit.anything different to expect with it compared to reg win7 32bit?

64-bit used to be a pain back when there was very poor driver support, especially on XP 64-bit as it was much rarer. Now that 64-bit OSes have been popularised though, the drivers are usually pretty easy to find. 64-bit OSes, apart from allowing more than 4GB of registered memory, also allow the use of 64-bit applications which can improve performance substantially if the program is coded to use it well.

so i shouldnt have any issues going 64bit route then? it will be a clean instal on a never used before WD3200AAKS drive. does anyone know of any known driver issues with win7 64bit as of now? this is about the only thing i have left that i want to do to my build and thats go 64bit so i can get and use more the 3.2gb of mem.

Some SuperPi times. CPU currently at 3780mhz (21x180). All I've done so far is up the base frequency and adjusted the memory speed to fit. That's it.

    Sam,
The core temps agree with the CPU temp at 37-38C for the 4 cores, and those are different sensors. EasyTune reports the same thing. 25C is not a high room temperature, but it's still a comfortable 78-79F in here. The CPU temp flickered twice to 38C and went right back to 37C. That's a far cry from the 62C or so it used to run at max stress when I first put the computer together. I've also changed the fans around to give the case positive pressure so the vent holes in the back of the case can help carry away some heat as well as the fans. I've got 93 cfm going in and 83 cfm going out. Seems to work very well!

I changed the bios to F9, which gave me more accurate readings on the cores, and AMC OD reports it about a degree less than Everest. The previous F8 bios reported the cores at 50% of what they really were. I've cut it back to 3.5GHz until I get the cooler modded. Here's the temps at idle, 25C ambient!
2C above ambient should be about right at idle. It's always been that way in the past with all my computers. I also got my lowest SuperPi 1M ever, at 3.5GHz.

Once I get the NB/VRM cooler modded and go back to 3.6GHz or higher, I'm sure I can get it well below that! One thing's for sure, I'll know before the weekend is over! LOL!!

Sam with my new fan settings my entire rig stays ultra cool. My processor has been running 45*C load with all fans on auto. Apparently leaving some on full blast messed up the air pressure inside the case. On auto all the fans scale together. Oh and it's quieter :p

The Phenom II seems to be a relatively cool running chip overall. They need stupid voltage but they get good temps.

This is a very serious question, so please don't get upset.

Is super Pi bias to Intel. I mean, does it favor the intels? Or do intel's simply have the number crunching capabilities to achieve nearly twice the 940 BE Phenom II?

im not normally biased (looks fondly at ASUS :p) but id agree to the intels just being that damned fast for number crunching.

And yet on the encoding times, it averages pretty close to the Phenom II. I wonder why that is. Encoding is simply a different form of number crunching LOL!

id assume due to instruction sets, which are largely intel based, and optomized, that AMD have to licsence form them and optomise. though compare a clock for clock lynfield (not even bloomfield/ and dont get started on gulftown) and intel will be very far ahead.

You're looking at an innate clock for clock advantage of the i5 vs the Phenom II of about 35-40% I'd say. Add to that that in the worse case scenarios a program may have up to a 50% lead in processing power with a particular brand, it's quite conceivable i5s could come out twice as fast per clock, let alone the fact that the i5 is clocked higher in this example.

    Hello everyone!

I was hoping you guys (and gals?) could help me build my next computer. I've had my Dell now for about 5 years and it's definitely time for an upgrade! I'll try to describe what I want to use the computer for as best as I can. I have some specific questions that I've posted below as well. If you think you're able to decipher what I'm looking for, maybe you can ask me some follow up questions, or you could recommend me some, if not all of the parts you think I would need. Or maybe just answer one or all of my questions.. Any and all help/input is much appreciated!

It's basically going to be a multi-media computer. I want a Blu-Ray drive/burner, lots of HD space, and an HDMI port. I have a flexible budget, depending on your recommendations.

    Here are my questions:

    1) I wont be gaming, or video editing, or anything like that on this computer, but obviously I do want it to be able to easily handle watching/burning Blu Ray movies, so how powerful of a CPU/Video card would you recommend for that?

    2) I want a BDROM drive/burner as one drive, then a DVDROM drive as the second drive. Which ones would you recommend?

    3) How many Hard drives can I realistically put in the tower before it gets overkill? What dictates how many drives I have, and what are my options for having extra hard drives?

    4) The aesthetics of the case are not important, this computer should be function over form. I need a case/fan system that is going to keep it cool and relatively dust free, I will dust it often though. Black case preferred.

    5) For a sound card, I need one that can handle 7.1 and sound pretty good. I'm not really what you'd call an audiophile though.

    6) I like the idea of having lots of ram, at least 4 gigs.. maybe more, depending on your recommendations.

    7) More ports, please! I like the idea of having atleast 1 HDMI port, 1 DVI and one VGA port, if possible? Can I get 2 HDMI outs? Is there a way to get component out, or is that a stupid question? Also, I need at least 6 USB ports. Preferably, 2 in the front, 4 in the back. But I'm not stuck on this.

    8) I would like this desktop computer to be able to connect to a wireless network, so I guess I'll need a card?

    9) Could I get Blu Tooth connectivity for this computer?

    10) USB 3.0 is pretty important to me as well, as I will eventually be hooking more Hard Drives to this computer, will I have to wait for this or is it available now?

Anyway, those are the questions I have. I know that I'm not nearly as tech savvy as some of you guys.. so if some of my questions are a bit strange I apologize. Thanks for reading, and thanks for your help!!

    Shaff,
I do hate to burst your euphoric bubble, but Intel has gotten caught with their fingers in the cookie jar this time! Here's the real reason AMDs are so slow!

    The Enquirer
    http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1567108/intel-compiler-cripples-code-amd-via-chips

The most interesting part is here. Amd is going to have a Renaissance!
    http://www.osnews.com/story/22683/Intel_Forced_to_Remove_Cripple_AMD_Function_from_Compiler_

As of 01/03/10, Intel was ordered by the Courts to remove the "Cripple AMD Function" from AMD's compiler. The difference without the crippler turned on, is as high as a 47% performance gain. That's the real reason that Intel is so much faster! It's not nice to cheat!

I think everyone here that owns an AMD should press AMD to replace their CPUs with ones without the intentionally flawed compiler, and Intel should have to pay for each and every one of them!

I'm posting this on the AMD thread as well, so let's start that movement right here!

Thanks russ. Appreciate that. I've had a sneaking suspicion for while now, that something just wasn't adding up :p Biased indeed! That's despicable! I suppose it's all in good rivalry though. Not that I agree with that practice LOL!

i did say in my second post that intel would optomise their instruction sets for them selves didnt i? :p

its stupid by intel though not surprisning! but im sure that was the story a long while back aswell? and anyways why dont AMD use their own instruction sets instead of relying on intels :p lol but one would think, that if a program is heavily using anintel instrustion set, that an intel CPU would be better at it, seeing as intel would have built the instruction set to work best on their CPUs.

its like how itunes runs fantastically on macs yet liek a dog on windows, does that mean all windows useres should go attack apple? no, id expect a mac to work with mac catered software better.

    Oman7,
No, that is not good rivalry at all, and Intel should be made to pay for every replacement CPU that is crippled. It's also an Illegal practice. I think that everyone that owns a crippled CPU, is entitled to a new one, with the offending code removed!
