No. None of them are currently installed. I needed to eliminate them as a possibility Well, the 3Tb's controller card is installed. But this bug predates the installation of the card.
The drive is disconnected, and the bug remains. And since it's less pronounced, I'm forced to believe that something about my setup, is being stressed by multiple drives. Either the southbridge, or the sata controller chip? I have a feeling, if I replaced 'U' drive with another, the problem would persist. At the moment I'm thinking none of my drives are the issue. Sure wish I had a secondary machine that could handle as much as my primary. But that's months away
If you run with just your OS drive and no add-on card you still have the problem? If so then try a newer drive with the OS on it to see if the problem is still there. I'm having a difficult time following exactly how you are eliminating things or just rotating swaps. You really need to get to bare bones and start from there, no add-on card(s), you can't trouble shoot if you're trying to run everything including the kitchen sink. Go back to a bare system and get that to work first. Then start introducing new parts ONE at a time until you find what is failing. Also do you tweak your system as that can cause problems too? I had a firm that always changed how the page file operates and they swore the new Intel MB’s were no good because after they got the systems I built they tweaked it and things starting not working proper. This guy was difficult to convince that what he was doing was wrong since he always did before and never had problems. Once I found out what he was doing I could demonstrate, recreate, his problem and what he was doing wrong, of course he never admitted he was wrong but he walked away happy, finally. For the record, only one add-in card is installed. Necessary for the 3Tb drive. The bug existed before I purchased the 3Tb drive and card. Here's what I understand. It was running fine for months. Since increasing my storage volumes, a bug was introduced and has become more persistent(could be coincidence). It's almost as though windows or my hardware doesn't like running so many drives or sata ports. When I disconnect hard drives, the problem seems to vanish. But perhaps it simply has become tame, and less pronounced. Since 'U' has been disconnected, the bug is less pronounced(short lived), and doesn't come about as often. I require access to all my drives. Is there a way to stress the sata chip? Like simultaneously stressing all hard drives? Ugh, to what end... Surely windows is not the issue though. Sam runs a great deal more drives in his file server! What's really tempting, is to plug both of my cards back in, and run the storage drives chiefly from the cards. But for all I know, an Optical drive could be responsible. So many possibilities, so little time LOL! I guess I could disconnect all Optical drives, and see what happens. This is really frustrating guys
That is very nice, very nice!! Kevin, Regardless of you needing your 3T drive more so you need to find the problem with your system. Go back to a bare system. If it runs clean, no problems bare, then introduce your add-on card without the hard drive and then hard drives one at a time making sure everything is working fine before continuing. You're just wasting time and effort screwing around. KISS, "Keep It Simple Stupid" is the best way to approach this otherwise you’re just going in circles. Also just because Sam runs a ton of drives doesn't mean that your mix will work nor does your assumption that Windows can't be at fault. You could still have a NTFS issue or as I mentioned something you have tweaked in the system, or something you have installed like software or drivers.
I just reformatted :S I haven't installed much at all. It's looking like a hardware issue for sure. You are right though. One at a time, I need to be patient, and eliminate one part at a time. It is difficult though. My drives are vital to my operations. I will get to the bottom of this. I know what needs to be done. It's just frustrating is all. Nice tower shaff. Mid tower, but respectable What can I say, I love beastly towers I will not speak of this anymore, until the only word on my mind is Eureka! LOL!
It is frustrating and you’re not the only one to bite off more than you should we all are guilty of that from time to time. That is a really nice tower I definitely could see using that next. Good pick by shaffaaf.
Shaff, I looks like a nerdy Phonograph or Suitcase from the late 50s, early 60s in the white & Black. It looks much nicer all black! Corsair has a lot of nerve calling that a MidTower. It's just a tad larger than the FullTower Rosewill. The Rosewill comes with 2 USB 3.0 ports for the front, vs 1 for the corsair. The Rosewill comes with 1 140mm rear fan, and three 230mm fans for front (switched LED), Side, and Top. The Corsair comes with 1 rear 120mm, 2 200mm front and top. The Rosewill has two fan controllers for up to 6 fans, while the corsair only has a single fan controller. The only minus I see for the Rosewill is the external connection for the two front USB 3.0 ports. It doesn't say how the single front USB is connected and because everything is black you can't tell by color, so your guess is as good as mine! The Rosewill also has 6 5.25" bays, while the Corsair only has 4. Both hold 6 3.50 or 2.50" HDDs. The temps were consistently in the lowest of all the cases in the tests. I also like the adjustable louvers on the top, so the beast isn't raining dust!, blowing straight up in the air. Even the filter for the PSU slips out to be cleaned with no tools! I also like that you can mount a 240mm Radiator and 2 120mm fans in the top! After reading the reviews, my choice would be the Rosewill. Best Regards, Russ
haha, that is true, its a pretty damned big case for a mid tower. Shaff, I don't know what the case in your pictures, but if it's a 600T, it must be an older one because I couldn't find anything that looked like it at Corsair. Airflow would be a nightmare because you are limited to 2 200mm fans and 5 120mm. As far as I'm concerned, it was dumb not to include other fan size options for the cover. No one in their right mind is going to listen to 4 120mm fans on the side cover, that have to spin fairly quick to move a lot of air. A single 230mm or a 250mm would be much better and much quieter. The Silverstone is an even worse nightmare because of it's narrow (8.35"/212mm) design, and it get's stuck with 3 180mm fans and a top 120mm, and limits how big a CPU cooler you can put into it. Here in Southern, the keeping the dust out of the top motherboard I/Os would be a real pain. Neither case can mount a 240mm Radiator in the top like the Rosewill can, because there isn't enough room! The $250 price tag for the Corsair and the $350 price tag for the Silverston all but shuts the door for me. They're just not worth the money! Pretty, yes! Effective cooling? I don't think so! Keep in mind, as the case size goes up, it gets harder to cool because you have to move more air to be effective, because there's more air to move to begin with! Best Regards, Russ
Russ, was just commenting on looks not really price nor air flow. the corsair I linked the pics too, was linked in the post I made prior to that one. you wouldn't need to fill the 4 side fan slots, personally I prefer mesh to a window. as for the Silverstone, if you use a self contained watercooling system, then all is fine. But there arnt many hsf that can't fit. you could add a 240 rad to the corsair replace of the single fan add 2 120s. And a 240 rad on the Silverstone on the 2 right most 180mm fans, as they have mounts ready for a 240 there. Plus their fans are damned good apparently, they are silverstones air penetrator fans. and according to bittechs review the Silverstone is the best aircooled case they have tested. as for price, that's fair enough. Personally, I would spend at most 250£ on a case. I think its worth it.
I don't see a problem with air flow and I like the looks but the price would be the deal breaker. The case is laid out very nice with expansion for HDD's and fan placement is good, I like it! You can always find negatives in this case (pun intended) it's the price.
Russ, on page #102, you posted an image of your motherboard and how you've modded the NB cooling. I can't tell if you removed the "Pretty blue" gigabyte cover from the VRM as well. Did you? Is it difficult? Should I be aware of anything before I begin?
That's a beautiful build, wish I could make my wiring look that good lol. I don't know if I did it wrong or not, but removing the stuff they used to adhere the shiny blue GB covers to the heatsink was a huge pain, especially since it didn't change my temps at all.
Shaff, The problem is they are 180mm fans, while the ones in the rosewill are 230mm. The rear fan on the Silverstone is 120mm, while the one on the Rosewill is 140mm. The 230mm fans only turn 500 rpm tops. The 180 Air Penetrator fans are about 1000 rpm and about 26Dba. At the cost of $259 vs the Rosewill at $159, I'll take the Rosewill! I can add a BD-Rom drive and still have money left over! BTW, I wasn't talking about the Corsair not fitting some CPU Coolers, I was talking about the skinny 8.35"/212mm wide Silverstone case. At 14.10" wide there's not any CPU Cooler the Corsair 600T can't accommodate. Best Regards, Russ
Oman7, I've removed both covers. They are only held on by Thermal Tape. They really aren't held on by very much. A little gentle prying with a couple of pocket screwdrivers, and they come right off! Russ
Russ seems to think removing the blue is an advantage. While it may not affect my temps, it's worth a shot. Logically, it would increase airflow to the heatsink Finding chipset water blocks is challenging LOL! I need to be sure it's compatible. I see lots of VRM water blocks. And the chipset water blocks i've looked at seem to be only compatible with ASUS boards. Gigabytes site does have a recommendation for theirs though. Surely there's a standard they have to follow concerning the bolt pattern on the NB? Thanks russ
