yes If you make sure you have updated firmware before using it...And check the forums to see which chipset driver works best with that drive...If i remember right, you use intel storage matrix for intel boards, not microsoft generic driver. BUT with AMD board, use microsoft generic driver, not the AMD version. you can find more detail in their support forums.
Thanks Deadrum. I've actually been reading a great deal of the reviews. So hopefully I won't make mistakes that others have E.g. I'll update the firmware before I install the OS on it. And I'll definitely have AHCI completely enabled in my bios. ALL drives will be set for this. Not sure why one of my current drives is IDE. I seem to have different controllers on my board. I probably won't get it til february. But who knows. Black friday may just tempt me with certain deals. It does every other year. Last year was rather disappointing. Russ, I doubted it, because I thought I ran the Chkdsk on that drive. Thinking back, the only drive I ran extensive tests on was one of my suspected Green drives. I suspected it, because when I disconnected it at one point, the bug magically disappeared for a time. I was really pulling my hair out. But...Problem finally solved. Things would certainly be a lot different if I had more workspace on my desk. It's rather discouraging at the moment, to have to open my case. My Dell U2410 is expected to arrive tomorrow. Thursday at the latest. I can eliminate a lot of wasted space with that badboy! You have no idea how happy I'm gonna be tomorrow. I've been rather depressed lately. I'm thinking the monitor may just lift my spirits Good riddance CRT monitor!!!
It should still be under warranty (3 year warranty iirc). Also I've had no problems with mine *knocks on wood*
It's got 4yrs left according to WD online. But the information may be incorrect. In any case, they should honor a replacement.
I'm thinking about getting one of these SSDs for a boot drive. Since I use XP, 60GB is good for me. It seems Patriot has some interesting size choices, compared to other drive manufacturers. They seem to be taking an all out approach to SSDs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220602 Russ
What method do they use for defrag & garbage cleaning since XP has no TRIM function? The first SSD i purchased didn't come with TRIM, and it only took a week or 2 of normal usage to slow the thing down to a crawl. it was enabled in a firmware flash later on, but it was a pain pouring over all the forums looking for answers and support. You are going to learn a few things jumping through all those hoops to get it to run properly, just dont pull out all your hair.
XP also has no excessive write protection, so be careful. Systems running XP can wreck SSDs very fast by using up all their write cycles.
Deadrum33, This is what it shows: DuraWrite extends the endurance of SSDs Intelligent Block Management and Wear Leveling Intelligent Read Disturb Management Intelligent "Recycling" for advance free space management (Garbage Collection) RAISE (Redundant Array of Independent Silicon Elements) Intelligent Data Retention optimization Russ
Here's a good question. What if one were to clone their existing windows 7 installation to a new SSD. WOuld windows 7 acknowledge that it's been moved to an SSD, and take the appropriate measures to not muck up the drive? Interesting. For whatever reason, TRIM is already enabled on my system. Perhaps that is just the way windows 7 is. ALREADY optimized. My monitor is here!
Windows would see the new device and load drivers and settings for it. Then it would ask you to reboot as it would be necessary for the new device. You can download the extra SSD tools for XP so Russ should be OK.
Sounds about right. Steve thanks for all your help man. Thanks everyone! Hooking up my new monitor now ♥
Any time my pleasure and I'm sure Shaffaaf's too! He really should have told you to check your HDD's though.... LOL
LOL Shaff! Steve, thanks again, for also recommending Acronis. It worked almost perfectly. Only two softwares required re-installation. Dvd rebuilder (weird eh?), and another. I'll definitely be using it again one day.
Ya, I like True Image too but I've never had to re-install anything, however if you had a bad sector or problems on your drive that you backed up this would/might explain the problem you had with DVD-RB.
Actually, it wasn't exactly an installation. It just required the Key file(activation) again. Still kind of weird. But perhaps the way his software associates is due in part to the hard drive model/serial number. Eh, I don't know.
Oh that makes a difference, it must be a registry issue since I would assume the key file is still in the install folder but needs to be confirmed in the registry. Dobb's got real anal about security because people were hacking his program and not paying. It still can be used without paying even with his extra security tactics however. He uses email address, username, hardware ID and date I think to generate keys for customers and amount of PC's it can be installed on. If I remember correctly???
That's also what I meant. Hardware ID. Perhaps it got mucked up somehow. I purchased his software, Honest! Fact of the matter is, I've donated about 70$ toward BD rebuilder as well. I love his software
I just changed a hard drive in one of my sisters PC's since it was starting to have issues so I cloned the OS drive using True Image to a new one, old drive was a 80GB AS Seagate and the new drive was a WD 250GB Blue. Just doing that forced me to reactivate Windows 7 (x86) when only the drive changed, so I'm sure that was your problem with DVD-RB. It surprised me that a hard drive changes should force such nonsense but then that is Microsoft at their best. LOL I paid for mine to Kev you have to support good software or else they stop to exist besides I tend to be a honorable individual, at least the majority of the time. For instance if a cashier gives me too much money back I always straighten it out with them instead of pocketing the money.
