I'm probably gonna buy a windows 7 install disc in the morning. NON Upgrade disc(Full version). Does the OEM version(for system builders) allow an upgrade option? I realize a clean install is the best route, but she's out of town, and this may be the best option. Any thoughts on this?

She's currently running Vista, and very irritated LOL!

You can always upgrade, it's the clean install you're not allowed to do if you only have an upgrade disc.

I was always under the impression it was better to just do a full install then to do an upgrade anyway. Less chance for anything flakey to occur

    Stevo,

I was thinking along those line for the PLL, and thanks for the speedy comeback. I just thought I would ask first. Here's some benchmarks, first the 1090T at stock 3.2GHz on the 790X board.

    Here's the Processor arithmetic 970X 3.2GHz

    Here's the Memory Bandwidth 3.2GHz

    4.0GHz

    990XA-UD3 3.6GHz Current speed

Since the 990XA is so much faster at a slower speed, and since I've had it clocked to 4.2GHz already, I'm reasonably certain that the 90,000 MIPS mark should happen about 3.8GHz, or about 200MHz sooner than on the 790X.

    Best Regards,
    Russ

Yeah Intel chips do sell fine (especially remembering the main part of the market is the low end stuff) - newegg reviews are a really terrible data source for this.

Thanks for your input. I would rather go clean install. Really not sure just how many programs she has installed. I guess I should wait til I see the computer, and what I'm up against before I make any decisions LOL!

Not true you can do a clean install with the upgrade disc, there are two different methods to do so.

IMO a perfectly clean install after a Killdisk is the only way to go.

    Sam,

On the contrary, Newegg reviews are the perfect place to get an idea of how things are in the retail world of computer components, especially since Newegg started verifying buyers. Just because Newegg isn't selling a lot of retail Intel chips right now, doesn't mean Intel doesn't sell any. Their OEM business alone, accounts for a huge amount of sales. Intel still sells two CPUs to every one AMD sells, or roughly 2/3 of the total sales.

I've been watching the sales of both Intel and AMD for a number of months now, and it's very apparent that the Phenom II line up (15 models), Deneb, Callisto, and Thuban, are the top sellers. They outsell the entire Sandy Bridge lineup (27 models) by well over 3 to 1, at 7713 to 2230, at least in the US. With 82 CPUs in Intel's lineup, the sales are going to lower tech CPUs, but 65% of them will still buy lesser Intel's! I'm quite sure, that was not Intel's intention! The top 3 sellers in the Phenom II lineup are the 965BE & 955BE Quads, and the 1090T BE Six core. The only Sandy Bridge chips selling in any significant numbers are the i5-2500k, and the i7-2600k, both with less than 1000 verified owners. These two chips combined don't equal the sales of the Phenom II x4 965BE! 3 others were in the very low triple digits in verified owners. It does give you a pretty good idea of how big the OEM market really is.

The Holiday season should prove to be better for AMD than for Intel. AMD has the lowest price Quads in the Athlon IIx4 2.6GHz Llano (no video) with 4MB L2 cache for $88, and the Athlon IIx4 3.2GHz Propus with 2MB L2 cache & C3 stepping for $99. They also have the Athlon IIx3 3.2GHz Rana with 1 1/2MB L2 cache & C3 stepping for $77. I'll have more about the 450 later in the week. From what I've seen with it so far, it's a much more competent chip than my original 2.8GHz 630 Propus was. I'm interested in seeing the difference between it on 790X and the GigaByte 990XA motherboards.

Oh, Bulldozer is going to be late, not because of problems with the architecture. Llano was the source of the problem, They had some surprisingly poor wafer yields, and it turned out to be something in the materials used to make the wafers. AMD has access to one 32nm Fab at the moment, and it's being occupied by these problems.

    Best Regards,
    Russ

You really don't normally need to low level format your drive unless you have some real problems that will only be fixed by that, and again that wouldn't be the norm.

    Russ,

Most large businesses in the US still stick with Intel however more than ever some companies are getting smarter and buying AMD instead or too, but Intel still rules the business world.

My friend who has the 970 got it through his work because they prefer Intel & Mac's so they can't be too smart can they? LOL

Final cut pro, would be the only reason I'd want an apple/mac. So I won't go there LOL! I'm sure Adobe Premiere pro, and Sony Vegas will suffice.

Dual boot like i do. Of course i did it as an experiment and still use Win7 for 99.9% of everything, but i have options. And, its fun to see the look on the face of a Mac fanboi when you tell them you built an 8 core (hyperthreaded intel 950) MacPro for less than 1/3 of retail. Of course i wont get any support from the Apple store if i have an issue, but then again i wont go to jail for strangling a bunch of self entitled fanbois that would frequent such an establishment so i guess it all works out.

I've got Hackintosh too I don't dual boot but have it on a PC by itself and also in VMWare VM. OS-X is nice I enjoy playing with it but don't find it better nor would I pay what Apple wants for their hardware, the OS is cheap to buy, as a matter of fact much cheaper than Windows.

I have setup a dual-boot for a friend and he likes it so it's not a bad path to go.

Kevin you forgot Pinnacle and a few other non-linear studio's but I get the drift... :D

I would like to play with Final Cut Pro maybe some day I'll get around to messing with it.

You guys are suggesting running a Virtual OS? Although I once bumped into a site, that listed specific hardware that would allow certain versions of OSX. I gather that would be considered Hackintosh?

Pinnacle? Uh oh... I'm installing windows 7 for a friend of the family in a few days, and that particular game is something she wanted to run. Am I to understand, that Pinnacle is exclusive to (only allowed on)Apple/mac?

    Shaff,

I guess then that thousands of people didn't buy them at Newegg, which would be very strange as Newegg usually has the best prices and deals. Stranger yet, the sales are there for the Phenom II's and have been increasing fairly fast. The numbers for Intel have been very slow, and I've been checking them at least weekly for months.

That article was all about the first and second quarters of 2011. We're in the 4th quarter. Most of the news about the second quarter the guy made up and everything about the 3rd quarter projections was made up as well. Otherwise he would have know about this!

    http://www.crn.com.au/News/253078,analyst-intel-sandy-bridge-demand-lower-than-expected.aspx

This had a major impact on second and third quarter sales!

Deadrum33 is running on an Intel base PC which is easy to install to but he isn't running a virtual machine at least that's not what he said.

I'm running on an AMD based PC so that is why I refer to Hackintosh as I have to make several patches or changes to the normal install to get it to work proper. Mac is very anal about only supporting their gear, proprietary to them, which we all know they charge double or more for.

I also like to have a VM so that I can play with stuff and experiment without screwing up a normal install. It also works nice if I have to support someone who is having problems.

I will get another Intel machine running down the road that I will use exclusively for OS-X, I have one good Intel processor left however I will probably build on a newer CPU so I may just sell the old one on Craig's list or keep it as it is getting old.

    Russ,

The 1.1% difference isn't huge, really trivial, and again I thinks it equates to businesses replacing old PC's as most big companies swap out their PC's every 3-4 years.

Like I said to Sam you can find marketing lies on both sides of the fence and companies quarterly reports are some of the best BS you can find, they always spin them and you have to look at how they state their numbers and what they aren't telling you to find the real truth or what seem to be reality.

I would have to say that NewEgg being one of the biggest sellers now would be a good ruler to go by so I think you're right on with your points.

Thanks for the clarification Steve. SOunds like Intel is the easier way to go. It's probably less buggy too eh? I'd prefer not mickey mouse the hell out of an OSX install on an AMD machine, just to run Final cut. But perhaps it runs better than I realize. Aw well. Perhaps one day. Don't have the time for such endeavors these days :(

Yes it is much easier to install OS-X on an Intel rig what I'll probably do is buy a Cheap QX series processor and cheap board before they totally go away and run the latest Mac software on it. I've heard that Final Cut is pretty sweet but that is hear-say so you can't always trust what others say unless you know them well. That's my problem too I had Leopard running fine on my AMD but switching to the new OS hasn't been so easy, I'm close but I've wasted a fair amount of time and have put it aside for now. Like you I have other things more important to get at like refinishing some of my bad windows in the house before winter hits us. I'm totally rebuilding them so it's about a weeks worth of work per window. I have 3 left so OS-X is on the back burner as well as some other stuff I'm playing with.

Just another reason not to buy Intel processors since they are adding copy protection schemes to their hardware. I guess I don't want the 990x after all....

CinemaNow adds 1080p films to catalog

    Way to go Intel! :D

What's next they'll be forcing our webcams on and watching us all the time?

On a side note; Yea!!! the Yankees lost the series..... :D sorry Russ
