Three audio CD-R burns skip at exactly the same place when burnt with Nero, original files are perfect

Hi fullm0nty, yes, changing the IDE settings in the BIOS fixed my problem.

I read somewhere that your DMA transfer mode may be downgraded from Ultra DMA to Multi-Word if persistent errors occur, as slowing down the transfer rate is supposed to fix the errors. I don't know whether this is true, or whether it was the case with me, but it appears that Ultra DMA was disabled in the BIOS for my Primary IDE Channel, and setting it to "auto" switched the transfer mode back to UDMA 2, which fixed the burning errors. Why, are you having the same problem?

 

I have a similar problem .. a few weeks ago (on my old PC) i could burn Audio CD's whitout any problems.
The cd's played everywhere (regular cd players), the sound was perfect (or exactly the same quality as the mp3).
Now that i've installed my new PC, it seems my home made audio cd's won't play on regular players anymore.
The player reognizes the disc but wont start playing (it's like it keeps searching for the song).
So when i listen to the cd on my pc or my home dvd-player, the songs all skip at one time.
No mather how many times i burn the same compilation on different media, the songs always skip.

Diffrend writing speeds or burning progs won't work, so maybe something is wrong with my IDE config.
Could the choise of IDE cable be of any importance? I used the one for CD rom that came with the motherboard.

Anyway my problem IS NOT fixed - my CDs are now skipping again, I have no idea why. Transfer mode is UDMA 2 now so it's not the transfer mode as I first thought. I tested the original CD I was trying to burn when I started this topic, and that skips in exactly the same place as before... so it's exactly the same problem. I have tried using each of my RAM chips on their own and the problem is still there. I don't know what to do now!

 

I could start a new thread but, reading about your problem i'm pretty sure it's more or less the same as mine..

The only thing i could come up with is Nero7, i'm using the demo version, could that be the problem .. ?
Did you try another burning prog?

 

If your player takes a long time to start playing the disc, try using different media, that sounds more like a disc read problem, maybe your laser is dirty? But the skipping in the same place is obviously the same with me. I have tried different burning programs, and everything else I can think of, including a full format and reinstall, and most recently a full MemTest on my 2GB of RAM, with no problems. And just to reiterate - my burners work perfectly in another PC. The only thing left that I could try is a new motherboard.....but I'm not doing that just yet. If you find a solution this problem elsewhere please could you inform me? Thanks

 

Still haven't sorted it. Something weird happened just now which must be linked to the problem - I ejected a CD from one of my drives, and both drives disappeared from My Computer and Device Manager. The IDE channels were fine. I shut down to inspect the connections - all fine. Switched it back on and now they are back. The problem remains though! Why would my drives disappear when I eject a disk?

 

I have been testing for the most part with MP3s after I established that the same thing was happening with WAVs, but it appears this is not the case. I just tried burning WAV files and the CD was fine! So the issue is with MP3s. The MP3 files were encoded at 320kbps from WAVs ripped from bought audio CDs. I have been using MP3s to burn CDs for about 8 years and this problem has only occurred recently, so what could be affecting the MP3 data that is burnt with Nero? I think that the MP3s have to be decompressed back to WAVE audio to be burnt, is this done in the HDD cache or using the RAM?

Thanks, t_drayson you've partially solved my problem 2 .. i also converted to .wav and the songs don't skip anymore.. However i don't understand how thats possible. I tought that file converting happens in the RAM, i checked in windows and the BIOS but my RAM is alive and kicking.

Get this - apparently for SOME USERS there is a known issue with the mp3 decoder/decompressor in all versions of Nero 7. There is a file "mp3pro.dll" in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\AudioPlugins which is used for converting all mp3 files before burning.
The version with Nero 7.0.1.2, 7.0.1.4, 7.0.1.4b and 7.0.5.4 is the same (2.0.5.1) and this appears to be the culprit for our problem.
As I said, only some users have this problem, so there must be a conflict somewhere with the system, but that my never become apparent, especially after a format and reinstallation! I am currently looking for an older version of the dll file, which I think you can obtain if you reinstall Nero 6 and copy it from there. Here is a link to where I found this information

I did mention that I tried different burning software earlier in the thread, but I think it's possible that they use Nero burning plugins - I discovered that Windows Media Player does if you have Nero installed! Does anyone have any recommendations for alternative burning software to Nero? I have used Nero and only Nero for about 8 years, so I don't really want to switch! I hope replacing the dll file solves this strange problem!

Incidentally, I tried using a link in that CDRinfo thread to download an older version of the file, but I cannot use Rapidshare, I get a "download session invalid" error for everything I try to download, even with my firewall off. Does anyone know how you get round this?
