Gentoo is a fine distro, a bit more like BSD than linux, but good nonetheless. You could also try Mepis or Slax.

Hey, almost everyone starts out that way with me, i'm the forum's resident @sshole and allround ornery b@stard. Once you get used to that, i'm not that bad, according to some. And indeed, i forgot mandriva, also a good distro.

True, Ubantu isn't perfect, but it's better than Windoze in the security dept. And noobs do need to crawl before they walk. I back up my hard drive regularly. And I am crawling, like any good noob, just as fast as I can away from Windoze.
