I got the following message on a white page:

"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file."

I tested with other files - the scanner does work. But it is unable to scan this particular file.

I'm going out on a limb here, but let's check for a rootkit.

Download [bold]F-Secure Blacklight[/bold] (blbeta.exe) to the desktop from here.

Open it and click [bold]Accept Agreement[/bold].
    Click "[bold]Scan[/bold]".
After the scan is complete, click "[bold]Next[/bold]", then "[bold]Exit[/bold]".
It will create a log on the desktop named "[bold]fsbl-xxxxxxx.log[/bold]" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan)

    Download [bold]Rootkit Revealer[/bold] from here.
Create a new folder, named [bold]RKR[/bold], in C:\
Extract the files to the new folder.
    Open [bold]RootkitRevealer.exe[/bold].
Close all other windows and click the "[bold]Scan[/bold]".
[bold]Important[/bold]: Leave the computer idle while the scan runs.
When the scan is finished, click File > Save... to save the text file to the C:\RKR\ folder.

Post back with the Blacklight log and the RKR log.

FYI: I have a file simlar to that on my desttop. It has a created date of 10/2005. I only see it if I unhide protected files. I did some extensive lookup on it. Seem others have this sort of file also. Always starts with a "C" is 8 charactors long and ends with a "." Saw a link to a program that is supposed to deal with it but I never heard of it before so be warned I know nothing about the program. Here is some interesting reading. Read page 2 through 4. Espically page 4. This file has not caused me any problems.

    http://forums.devshed.com/windows-help-34/unable-to-delete-a-file-of-zero-size-354331-2.html

    http://www.purgeie.com/delinv/index.htm

    Search term I used was
    Hidden file desktop "0 bytes"

    Rootkit scans are clean.

Yes, use DelinvFile. Seems by other's experience even DOS can't delete those files.

    Great find bkf!! Cheers!

Awesome! It worked! You guys are brilliant...I really appreciate your time and effort Niobis (and co.). I think I wouldn't be needing to format my computer anymore. I'm definitely recommending this site to my mates. What on earth was that strange file anyway?!

So am I clear of any trouble for now? I remember you mentioning something about clearing my System Restore files or something?

Don't know for sure. Too many different suggestions...but it is for sure-it's not malicious.

Yes, turn off System Restore to clean the files.
Right click My Computer > Properties > System Restore tab > check "Turn off System Restore".
    Click Apply, then OK.
Restart and turn System Restore back on.

    Be fine after that.

You're welcome, for my part anyway. :)

Done...thanks for the help! Really appreciate it. My scanners are still detecting random trojans from time to time even though I visited any suspicious sites. I guess I just have to scan my computer very regularly from now.

    Again - thanks a million!

That's not good. Can't let you go still infected, lol. What scanner, and what are the names? Also, post a new HijackThis log, please.

AVG Free Scan detected a Trojan and cleaned it. I'm thinking, maybe it was detected because I hadn't cleared my Virus Vault or something. But anyways, here's my new hijackthis log:

Oh, okay. In that case, should be fine.

    One last thing.
    Java is out of date.
Go here and download [bold]Java Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10[/bold].
Uninstall all previous version and updates of JRE via [bold]Add/Remove Programs[/bold].
    Restart and install [bold]Update 10[/bold].

    Good luck. :)
