And yep, president approved the legislation yesterday and it will come into effect probably 1st of January, 2006.

aabbccdd: Thanks. We've anticipated the legislation for years now -- although not in such draconian form as it now was approved in -- and have made variety of plans to cope with the situation and are in talks with our lawyers already to see what's doable and what's not. One option might be that we simply remove the most obvious problems (==rippers) from the site, but continue otherwise as usual and if we are sued, well, we simply go through the whole process and see what the courts think about it. That would surely cost money in legal fees, but it would at least buy us several years extra time.

There's also one issue with the legislation that hasn't been defined properly -- the law talks about how it is illegal to distribute tools that allow circumventing efficient technical copy protections. Can one claim CSS to be efficient, if it has been hacked with couple of lines of Perl code and is widely known how to break it? Surely, for distrubuting tools to allow circumventing future copy protections that would cause trouble (HDCP being the most notable one), but at least the well-established tools would remain in safety.

IHoe: Don't into conclusions, we don't know yet how we'll cope with this new situation, thus speculating about it is rather pointless. Anyway, we know the situation, you pretty much know the situation and we're working to find a solution and will update our users when we find one.

i just hope AD doesnt end up like Burningbits guys. All those RIAA pricks and authoritive bodies putting a clamp on free speech.

With us well there is no discussion on CSS,otherwise macrovision will close us.Thats a reality i dont want to see so unless another alternative fronts up we have to toe the line,

WHERE WILL ALL THIS MADNESS END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there is no such thing as [bold]FREEDOM OF SPEACH[/bold] when it comes to big business. If it is hurting THEIR business THEY will find a way to stop it! It's inevitable. That's the way I see it and all the horn blowing about it won't change a thing! Money talks BS walks.....and I feel that if someone doesn't take a stand on this NONSENSE then we will all suffer and even be jailed for it! Anything to make THEM more money! Why put out a product and then THEY have a right to tell you HOW TO USE IT! Soon there will be BOOK BURNING too! When will this all stop!???

The problem is that it makes even backing up your legally owned DVD's. Posession of tools to do this is also illegal and having an "organized" conversation on any of this will be against the law. It doesn't matter where you live, you are going to get penalized with this one because of the "organized" conversation thing. I suppose we could all just PM everyone who asks, and just answer posts with the weather reports in our area.

Well, IMO closing down aD is an open attack on everyone's freedom of speech...They simply can't do that... aD will have to stop hosting copy protection circumventing programs in the worst case scenario, but they simply cannot take away our rights of discussing anything we want.
If anything happens, I wouldn't be averse to donating a couple of bucks to aD to help with legal costs.

And oh yeah, on a lighter note, does anybody here want a free Ipod?
:) Just kidding, please dont ban me.

Ditto that... I haven't been as active lately as I have been in the past, but I still end my day getting "up to speed" here on aD... Just point to that PayPal link if the need arises. The knowledge that I've gained on aD is invaluable!!!

We wont be asking donations, ever. It is simply against our principles nowadays and would also be awful hassle legally (accepting donations requires a permission in Finland) -- we did it back in 2001-2002 and it saved us financially back then and we still owe enormous thank you for all the people who donated back then. Best way to help us financially, if you want to do so, is always the same -- support the companies who advertise on our site. If you plan on buying software/hardware/whatever, use links on our banners to do so.

But again, I'd like to stress the fact that we're not beaten yet, even tho the outlook of near future looks slightly dim. We have variety of options available, but due the nature of things, we can't state "yay! we've found a solution" until we actually find one and get our lawyers to confirm that it will work.

yes lets stay postive guys ,dRD and his crew will figure out a way around this so DONT panic ,we will all stick together and get though it.

i was thinking maybe we could start a group on msn and have or own private chat room to talk about ripping and burning dvds and we can just all meet there .i belong to several music groups so why not start one about all the stuff we chat about here
